Hobbies & Fun Things

I still dabble in photography, although not as much as in the earlier years...home chemical cost for colour darkroom work has gone through the roof, while develop-and-print service at Superstore is only $2.99 for 24.

I've been intending to get my '49 Austin running again...been intending for 32 years...the '49 Austin sits on blocks in my garage, but the '70 Alpine GT and '72 Fargo sit out on a farm north of town, quietly rusting away.

What do I do for fun? Mostly either repair "things" [electronics] or escape into an SF book universe (usually Star Trek or Zanth)...lot more "fun" than cleaning the floor or walking the dog.

Post-secondary Education

School: Program Name

What's Happened Since High School

I spent 1970-75 at UVic training, as I thought, as a science teacher. Things went well until my final practicum at Lake Cowichan High. Sr. high was OK, but Jr high did me in but good...I marvel that my brother Tim is still fairly sane after teaching Jr High for ~20 years. I then spent 1975-77 at B.C.I.T. training in environmental health.

I've been the Public Health Inspector out of the Fairview District office since August 28, 1978. Fairview is a community of 3,800 in the Peace District of Alberta. While no longer a "prairie town" as such (they tore down our last grain elevator a few months back, and the rail line is being abandoned), we are still a farming-based community (with a mixture of oil & gas, forestry, and government). I still find the work "interesting", and challenging after 22 years.

I met Ruth at our local Pentecostal Church. We were married in 1982...instant family situation, as Ruth had a son, Doug ('78), from her first marriage.

Mom & Dad still live at Duncan (Dad now on 3rd floor at Cowichan District Hospital). I've been following the changes over the years...houses everywhere... I keep in touch with Charlie Jamieson & Don Dawes, who tell me of the goings on of many of our compatriots.

Other Comments

2000: Am I thinking of attending (the reunion)? No...although I may change my mind.
A goodly number of years back I spent an afternoon looking through Cowichan Leader microfilm from 1970-80 to see who married whom...I often wonder how many are still married to the same partners.

After Charlie told me of this proposed reunion in April, I spent a while looking at grad pictures on the walls at Cowichan High. The memories stirred up were not "happy": I spent all three years at Cowichan High feeling I was unwanted, a social outcast, with few I could call "friend" no matter how hard I tried [a few years back Nancy Mills said my problem was that I tried too hard and scared people away!]... I spent most of my time afraid, watching, wishing, taking pictures, and crying [in counseling they described me as a social cripple...my wife says I still am], with Band being the only "bright spot".

Which brings me back to my earlier comment: I don't think I will attend because the bad memories are just too strong [at an earlier reunion I got as far as the door, then turned around after hearing the voices and remembering]. What I do look forward to is reading what others have posted on Joe's (reunion) website.

UPDATE: Jeremy attended the Friday night event in 2000.
